Fagradalsfjall alarm… State of emergency declared after more than 20 thousand earthquakes

There is great fear surrounding the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland.

Following thousands of consecutive earthquakes in the region in recent weeks, a state of emergency was declared over fears that the volcano could erupt at any time. Authorities took measures to evacuate thousands of people.

The Icelandic Meteorological Agency reported that the magma flowing from the volcano is advancing underground and they fear it will come to the surface in the area where the settlements are located.

Activity at the volcano, which has been silent in the region for 800 years, is increasing rapidly after the 2021 eruption. Due to increased seismic activity, the popular lake in the region was closed to visitors.

MORE THAN 20 THOUSAND SHAKES

More than 20,000 tremors have occurred in southwestern Iceland since the end of October.

The local government calmly called on the population to leave the area and stated that it was “a warning beyond an emergency measure.” Roads leading to the area were also closed to traffic and teams were assigned to leave.

Iceland is one of the most geologically active places in the world and there are approximately 30 areas of active volcanoes in the country. Many tourists flocked to Iceland after the explosions in the Fagradalsfjall region in July.
