The latest US election poll showed that Trump remains popular with the Republican base, despite state and federal charges against him.
According to the poll, Trump was 34 points ahead of his closest follower, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and 52 percent of Republican presidential candidates did not give up a free hand. DeSantis is stuck at 18 percent.
Former Vice President Mike Pence and former US representative to the United Nations Nikki Haley trail DeSantis with 7 percent, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy with 6 percent, South Carolina Sen. While 43 percent of those polled said they would “definitely” support Trump, 61 percent said they believed the former president would “very likely” run in the 2024 election as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate.
Most respondents indicated that they felt the charges against Trump were not related to his ability to serve as president and that they were not seriously concerned about the impact of such charges on Trump’s eligibility.
Only 16 percent of those polled said they would never vote for Trump in the primary election, due to his role in the Jan. 6 raid on Congress.
The CNN poll was conducted August 25-31 among 1,503 adults nationwide, 784 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents registered to vote. (AA)
