Order to the Niger army “Prepare for a military intervention”
The junta, which seized power in Niger last month, warned soldiers “to be ready for the attack at the highest level.”
According to the news, citing a document published by Reuters defense units in the country, it was stated that “the threat of attack on the country is very high” and a call was made to the army for maximum preparation. “Threats of attacks on our national territory are increasing,” the document says.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had previously given the green light for a military intervention in Niger, but had started talks with coup leaders to prioritize diplomatic efforts.
In Niger, President Mohammed Bazum was detained by elements of the Presidential Guard Regiment on July 26, and that night the military announced that it had seized power. General Abdurrahmane Tchiani, commander of the Presidential Guard Regiment, became head of the transitional government called the National Council for the Protection of the Fatherland (CNSP) on July 28.
The CNSP appointed Lamine Zeine prime minister on August 7 and announced the 21-member cabinet on August 10, made up of soldiers and civilians. (AGENCIES)
