FIFA removes Spanish President Rubiales from office

The head of the Spanish association, Luis Rubiales, kissed the player on the lips at the award ceremony of the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia – without her consent. Despite the criticism, Rubiales wanted to keep his post. Now the World Association comes into play.

He did not want to go alone, now he will have to: The head of the Spanish association, Luis Rubiales, has been removed from his post by FIFA. The World Association suspends the 46-year-old footballer from any football activity for at least 90 days. This is stated in a statement by FIFA on Saturday.

A few days ago, FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales. The reason for this was the kissing scandal after the triumph of the Spaniards at the World Cup. Rubiales kissed newly crowned world champion Jennifer Hermoso on the lips. The kiss caused an uproar. Demands for resignation became loud. But Rubiales wanted to keep his post and spoke of a “society attempt” on him.

The ousted head of the association said the kiss was consensual. The player strongly disagrees. In a statement on Friday, she said: “I felt vulnerable and the victim of impulsive, sexist, inappropriate action without any authorization from me.” She also blames the association for persuading her to issue a statement downplaying and legitimizing the attack.
