Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned from the House of Commons over an inquiry into the so-called Partygate scandal. According to British media, he immediately gave up his seat for the borough of Uxbridge and South Ruislip. Johnson says in a statement that he has received the findings of a parliamentary inquiry and that that inquiry committee has sought to expel him from parliament.
The investigation revolves around whether Johnson deliberately misled parliament when he spoke of parties held at the official residence during the crown lockdowns. According to Johnson, there is no evidence that he did anything wrong, but researchers apparently think otherwise.
According to the Conservative politician, the committee is biased and was always ready to convict him. “I have not lied and I think the committee knows it in their hearts,” said the former prime minister. “To my surprise, the committee is determined to kick me out of parliament.” Johnson had previously admitted that he did not tell the truth in the House of Commons, but he would not intentionally do so.
The Partygate scandal is one of the reasons Johnson had to step down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom a year ago. There was great dissatisfaction within society, but there was no longer any support for him even within his own Conservative Party. According to a reporter for The Daily Telegraph newspaper, members of his party were unaware of Johnson’s intention to resign. Even the former prime minister would not be in the United Kingdom at the moment, but in Africa.
Johnson has been a Member of Parliament since 2001. His resignation means that a new election will be held in his Greater London borough. Johnson has not yet said whether he will run in that election. “It is very sad to leave parliament, at least for now,” he wrote.
