A liter of milk costs 30 lira

Ahead of tomorrow’s special meeting of the National Dairy Council (USK), there were further increases in milk and milk products.

It was indicated that this increase was due to the decrease in production and the increase in costs, and it was indicated that another increase would take place after the determination of the prices of raw milk.

Consequently, the price of a liter of common brand milk across the country increased by 20 percent to 31.6 percent in one week.

While the prices per liter of semi-skimmed milk of some brands increased from 18.95 TL to 24.95 TL; the price of a liter of whole milk increased to 27.70 TL.

With recent increases, even the price of a liter of brand-name milk has remained at 20 lira. The average price of branded milk in the market, which increased to about 12 TL and then 15 TL in 3 months, increased by 19% in one week and reached 18.5 TL.

THIS MONTH YOGURT HAS INCREASED BY 10 PERCENT AND CHEESE BY 13 PERCENT

The same cost is experienced across the dairy group.

After the weight of cheese exceeded 100 lira, the prices of yogurt also exceeded 70 lira, depending on the type; Prices vary between 42-72 TL.

In the hunger and poverty line data announced by Türk-İş for January 2023, it was indicated that milk and milk products continued to increase in January.

Announcing that yogurt has increased by 10 percent and cheese by 13 percent this month, Türk-İş made the following statements in its statement:

“In yogurt, brands began to produce 900 and 800 gram containers instead of 1000 gram containers. Now, the 750 grams have also started to become general.”

SENDING COWS TO THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE IS EFFECTIVE, THE PRIMARY CRISIS IS AT THE DOOR

The most important reason behind the continued increase in milk and milk products is that the dairy farmer, who cannot afford the cost, sends his dairy cows to slaughter.

Milk produced at approximately 12 lira per liter can be sold at 8 lira. This caused a significant part of the milk-producing cows to be sent to the slaughterhouse so as not to cause further damage.

Sending milk-producing cows to slaughter for months on end has also started to lower production.

According to the latest data announced by TUIK, butter production decreased by 18.5%, ayran production by 8.8%, drinking milk production by 7.4% and cow cheese by 5.1%. annually in November 2022.

However, the real meat and milk crisis is at hand; This decline in production is expected to boost consumer prices towards the end of this year.

USK WILL MEET TOMORROW, MAY HAVE ANOTHER INCREASE

On the other hand, USK will hold an extraordinary meeting tomorrow to determine the prices of raw milk.

The producers, who continue to make losses by selling a liter of milk at 8.50 TL net, demand that this price be increased to at least 12 TL.

However, at this point, some recurring problems do not redound in favor of the producer, despite the increase in raw milk prices:

In the past year, after each USK raw milk price increase, the price of feeds also increased. The producer, whose input costs increased immediately after the increase in the price of raw milk, cannot be happy with the increase in the price of the liter of milk that he sells.

When the manufacturer, whose raw milk occupies an important place among the cost items, has to transfer this increase to the final product, consumer prices also increase.

The manufacturer also demands a solution to this vicious circle experienced in the last year.

IN A YEAR IT HAS BEEN HIGH BY APPROXIMATELY 100 PERCENT

A liter of milk cost 10 lira at the beginning of December 2021; At the end of December, after the USK meeting held at that time, it had risen to 14 lira.

At the end of April 2022 and the beginning of May, the retail prices of milk and milk products increased once more; At that time, the milk producer sold a liter of milk at a loss of 5.70 TL, so it cost 8 lira per liter, while the price of a liter of milk in the markets increased to 16 lira.

At this point, it has risen to 27.70 TL as of January 2023. Thus, prices per liter of milk for some brands have increased by more than 95 percent in one year.
