The plane’s route was diverted 550 kilometers: it landed in another city
In Nigeria, a United Nigeria Airlines plane taking off from Lagos bound for the capital, Abuja, landed at the wrong airport.
The plane’s crew chief announced: “Welcome to Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja,” but the plane landed at its main destination, the city of Asaba, located on the western bank of the Niger River, approximately 550 kilometers from Abuja.
REASON: BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS
In his statement on the incident, United Nigeria Airlines spokesperson, Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu, argued that “the confusion was due to poor weather conditions” and said: “The pilot directed the plane to Asaba after receiving information from the unit of airport aviation”.
On the other hand, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority stated that the airline’s activities have been suspended and an investigation has been launched into the incident. (AA)
