Prison sentence for the former vice president
Iran’s former first vice president, Ishak Jahangiri, was sentenced to 12 months in prison in the case in which he was tried for “slandering and insulting” the speaker of Parliament, Mohammed Baqir Qalibaf.
According to Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, the court sentenced Cihangiri, who served two terms as first vice president during the previous government, to 4 and 8 months in prison, respectively, on charges of “slander and publication of false information.”
Citing Cihangiri’s “delicate responsibilities,” the court commuted the prison sentence to a fine of 44 million Tomans (about $900).
Ishak Jahangiri, first vice president during the reign of former president Hassan Rouhani, accused Muhammad Baqir Qalibaf, then mayor of Tehran and announced his candidacy for the presidency, during the 2017 presidential election campaign, with accusations such as “embezzlement and illegal confiscation of public property “he accused.
