UN reaction to Israel: there is air in the military method
The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Guterres, was the guest of the program organized within the framework of the event called “Reuters Next.” Stating that the Hamas hostages must be released “urgently and unconditionally,” Guterres stated that in this context he continues communication with influential countries such as Qatar.
Guterres stated that humanitarian aid access to Gaza is of vital importance. While before 500 trucks of aid entered per day, currently only 630 trucks enter in 18 days. He said: “So far too little help has been provided and it is too late.” he said.
Underscoring that fuel is still not allowed into Gaza, Guterres noted that the supply of water, food and medicine is very problematic.
“THE HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IS A DISASTER”
Guterres: “The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic.” He stressed that all parties should respect international humanitarian law.
Recalling that the UN publishes a report on children killed in conflict every year, Guterres said: “The number of children killed in conflict each year is in the hundreds. Thousands of children were killed in Gaza in a short time. “It is clear that there is a mistake in (Israel’s) military method.” he said.
Guterres: “A humanitarian ceasefire must be established.” He stressed the need to respect the laws of war.
Assessing that the horrific images emerging every day from Gaza call into question “sympathy towards Israel following the Hamas attack” on October 7, Guterres stated that it would be in Israel’s interest for Israel to respect the laws of war.
“WE CANNOT INTERFERE IN COURT MATTERS”
“Can accusations of war crimes against Hamas or Israel be tried at the International Criminal Court?” Guterres responded to the question: “This is for the court to decide. “We cannot interfere in court affairs.” he replied he.
Guterres affirmed that they are willing to provide all necessary support, respecting the independence of the International Criminal Court.
“The UN HAS NO MONEY OR POWER, BUT IT HAS A VOICE”
On the question of what the UN can do, Guterres said: “We have no money, we have no power, but we have an independent voice based on the UN Charter.” saying.
Guterres noted that the UN also has “the capacity to bring together.”
Stating that the number of UN staff killed in the attacks in Gaza has risen to 92, Guterres stated that it was not possible to provide a safe environment for employees.
“MEMBER STATES CAN DECIDE THE FUTURE ROLE OF THE UN”
Guterres said member states can decide what kind of role the UN can play in Gaza in the future.
“However, I think the ideal scenario would be for the Palestinian administration to take political control in Gaza after the military operation.” In making his assessment, Guterres stated that serious negotiations should begin for a two-state solution. (AA)
