EU conditional support for Israel

The President of the Council of the European Union (EU), Charles Michel, assessed the situation in Gaza in his opening speech at the annual conference of EU ambassadors.

“Israel is a friend and ally of the EU,” Michel said, stressing that they will always support Israel’s right to defend itself in accordance with international humanitarian law.

Reiterating the call for a humanitarian ceasefire made at last week’s EU Leaders’ Summit, Michel stressed that permanent peace in the future will only be possible through negotiations on the basis of a two-state solution.
