US says ‘ceasefire’ benefits Hamas
After the meeting with the foreign ministers of Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Amman, capital of Jordan, the US Secretary of State Blinken met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Samih Shukri and held a joint press conference with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.
Claiming that calls for a ceasefire in blockaded Gaza would lead Hamas to “recover,” Blinken stated: “A ceasefire now will allow Hamas to regain its strength and repeat what it did on October 7.”
Blinken added that he believes a humanitarian pause in hostilities can be a critical mechanism to protect civilians and expel foreigners from the region.
EMPHASIS ON LASTING PEACE
Stating that he shares the same basic interests and goals with his Egyptian and Jordanian counterparts, Blinken said they will continue to work to resolve Israel’s attacks on Gaza in a way that ensures permanent peace and security in the region.
“NEW FRONT” AGENDA: AGREED
Blinken stated that the meeting agreed to avoid opening a new front and said: “Throughout this conflict, Middle Eastern countries and other countries played an important role in preventing the spread of the conflict. “Today we all agree on the importance of using our influence and capabilities to prevent any state or non-state actor from opening a new front in this conflict or committing destabilizing actions.” saying.
“HUMANITARIAN AID IS INSUFFICIENT”
Regarding humanitarian aid in the region, Blinken said the joint effort of Egypt, Jordan and the United States played a “critical” role in increasing the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Blinken stated that more than 100 trucks of humanitarian aid enter Gaza every day through the Rafah border gate, but that this is not “enough” and that measures will be taken to accelerate the delivery of aid.
“ISRAEL SHOULD TAKE ALL PRECAUTIONS TO PREVENT CIVIL LOSSES”
Blinken stated that the meeting emphasized the need to protect Palestinian civilians, saying: “Israel should take all possible measures to avoid civilian casualties. In my meetings yesterday with Israeli officials, I outlined the additional steps they can and should take to achieve this. “Protecting civilians will help prevent Hamas from further exploiting the situation, but most importantly it is the right and moral thing to do.”
“THE SITUATION IN THE West Bank has worsened”
Blinken expressed deep concern about the escalation of extremist violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, noting that it has worsened since Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
Stating that he raised this issue in his meetings yesterday with the Israeli government, Blinken said: “I stressed that provocation and extremist violence must stop and perpetrators must be held accountable.”
TWO STATE SOLUTION
Blinken emphasized that the only feasible solution is a two-state solution, saying: “The United States continues to believe that the only feasible solution is a two-state solution. “Israelis and Palestinians have the same right to security, freedom of opportunity and to live with dignity in their own state, exercising their legitimate rights,” he said.
Stating that the United States and its partners have different views on how to ensure security and achieve peace in the region, Blinken said: “However, we all realize that we cannot return to the status quo and we all understand that we cannot It’s just our interest. but also our responsibility to do everything possible to chart a better path together.” (AA)
