The swearing-in in Parliament of Princess Leonor, the first heir to the throne of Spain, on her 18th birthday generated controversy in the country.
The Princess, heir to her father, King Felipe VI, swore fidelity to the Constitution in the ceremony held today in Parliament.
The princess, who attended the ceremony with her father, mother and sister, promised to respect the King and the laws of the country.
Most of the ministers and regional leaders were present at the event, which was also broadcast live on Spanish television. However, many parliamentarians from separatist and left-wing parties boycotted the ceremony.
‘THE MONARCHY IS AGAINST DEMOCRACY’
Some ministers from the leftist Unidas Podemos party did not attend the ceremony, saying that an unelected leader and the monarchy were against democracy. The pro-independence deputies from Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia were also not present at the event.
Princess Eleanor, who recently began three-year military training according to royal rules, will ascend to the throne directly after her father as queen if she does not have a son.
On the other hand, a poll conducted last year revealed that 51 percent of Spaniards were in favor of Spain becoming a republic.
