The dam overflowed, epidemics arose

A dam overflowed in Ghana and epidemics emerged

Cases of typhoid fever and malaria in the Buipe region of Volta Province in Ghana, where the Akosombo Dam is located, have been reported to make up almost 85 percent of the diseases reported to health facilities.

Buipe district official Bridgewurche Barchisu Mankir said the depletion of water resources in the region was one of the reasons for the increase in typhoid cases.

“THERE IS NO SOURCE OF PURE WATER”

Noting that there is no source of drinking water in the region, Mankir said, “We are really suffering from the flood disaster. This will further widen the already existing health gap. “Go to the hospital and see that the people there and even those at home are suffering from typhoid and malaria,” he said.

Approximately 26 thousand people displaced due to flooding have limited access to drinking water and health services. (AA)
