Senior Israeli official resigns in the US: we cannot support the occupation
A director general of the US State Department announced his resignation, saying he could no longer support the US administration’s pro-Israel stance.
Josh Paul, director general of the “weapons supply to allies and partners” unit of the United States Department of State, explained the reason for his resignation in a letter published on the professional social network LinkedIn. According to the letter, Paul stated that he was aware that he would face some moral dilemmas when he began serving in the unit in question, and that he decided to continue tolerating them “as long as the benefit outweighs the harm.”
Paul claimed that he made moral concessions during his 11-year term, but that the “transfer of lethal weapons to Israel” exceeded his limits.
“We cannot be against the occupation and at the same time support the occupation,” Paul said, adding that Israel’s US-backed policy has caused great harm to both Israelis and Palestinians.
Paul commented: “Blindly supporting one side does not benefit either side” and noted that the United States was repeating its past mistakes. Declaring, “I don’t want to be a part of this anymore,” Paul announced that he has resigned from his position of 11 years. (AA)
