The workers of the automobile giant started a strike
In a statement from the UAW, it was reported that unionized workers rejected the tentative agreement on the contract offer.
The statement states that approximately 4,000 unionized workers at Mack Trucks factories in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida went on strike starting today.
The UAW statement states that with the participation of Mack Trucks workers, the total number of unionized workers on strike exceeded 30,000 in 22 states.
THE COST OF THE STRIKE IS 5.5 BILLION DOLLARS
On the other hand, the economic consulting firm Anderson Economic Group (AEG), based in Michigan, shared its latest analysis on the strike called “Stand Up” organized by UAW workers against General Motors (GM), Ford Motor and Stellantis.
The AEG statement states that the strike is estimated to cause a total economic loss of $5.5 billion over three weeks.
The statement notes that the figure in question exceeds the estimated economic damage of $4 billion caused by the month-long strike launched by the UAW against GM in 2019.
The statement states that $579 million of the economic losses in question are estimated in direct wage losses, $2.68 billion in producer losses, $1.6 billion in supplier losses, and $1.26 billion dollars in losses to distributors and customers.
AUTOMOTIVE WORKER STRIKE
Approximately 13,000 workers decided to strike after UAW negotiations with Ford, GM and Stellantis over the new contract for approximately 150,000 workers did not reach an agreement as of September 14, the end date of the current contract.
Thus, the auto workers’ strike targeting the three major automakers began on September 15 and, for the first time in the union’s 88-year history, workers at three auto factories went on strike together.
The union announced on September 22 that it would extend the strike against GM and Stellantis due to a lack of progress in new contract negotiations. In this context, it was reported that workers would stop working at 38 more GM and Stellantis facilities in 20 states.
Last week, the UAW announced that 7,000 more members working at Ford Motor and GM would go on strike and that there would be no new strikes at Stellantis since contract improvements were made.
The statement issued by the union last week stated that progress had been made in negotiations with automakers. (AA)
