Civilian death toll announced in Russia-Ukraine war
A session was held at the UN Security Council on current events in Ukraine.
In her intervention here, the UN Undersecretary General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, recalled that since the beginning of the war they warned about the serious effects of the conflict not only in Ukraine but also in the region and the world.
560 of them are children
Referring to the latest report on Ukraine from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), DiCarlo stated that 9,806 civilians, including 560 children, lost their lives and 17,962 civilians were injured due to the war.
THE REAL NUMBERS ARE TOO HIGH
DiCarlo noted that the actual numbers could be much higher and warned that the numbers would rise if the conflict continues.
DiCarlo noted that the attacks following Russia’s exit from the Black Sea Grains Initiative affected not only Ukraine but also millions of people struggling with food insecurity around the world.
“WORRYING”
Noting that attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have increased, DiCarlo said they are concerned about this situation.
DiCarlo said: “In recent weeks, the impact of the war has spread to the Black Sea. The use of sea mines threatens civil navigation. A deliberate or accidental military incident in the Black Sea would further destabilize the region. “We reiterate our call for moderation and demand that activities that worsen the situation in the region be avoided.” he said.
