Lake overflowing, dozens of people lost in floods
At least 14 people lost their lives when the lake, which was frozen due to heavy rain yesterday in India, broke and overflowed, causing flooding on the mountain road.
The sudden heavy rain, which yesterday caused heavy rainfall in a short time on the Lhonak glacial lake, caused flooding in the Teesta valley, located 150 kilometers north of Gangtok, capital of the state of Sikkim, near the border with China. Authorities announced that 102 people were missing, including 22 military personnel.
The flood that occurred in northeast India and affected 22,000 people was the latest of the deadly weather events seen in the mountainous region of South Asia, with claims that the flood was caused by climate change.
