Stefanos Kaselakis, 35, elected the new leader of Greece’s main opposition party, SYRIZA, announced that he will enlist in the army.

Kaselakis, who said he would take a break from politics for a while and complete his military service in early 2024, said he wanted to do his military service on the Turkish border or on the Aegean islands, where there is an influx of migrants. .

Military service is mandatory for all men in Greece. Kaselakis, who has lived in the United States since he was 14, must complete his six-month military service.

Kasselakis, a businessman who was criticized for his inexperience in politics and received widespread criticism, especially from the left, said: “It is an honor for me to serve in the military.”

Kaselakis was a parliamentary candidate in the May and June 2023 general elections at the invitation of former SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras, who brought SYRIZA to power in 2015, but did not qualify to enter parliament.
