Armenia and the United States will start holding joint military exercises in Armenia starting next week.

In the statement of the Ministry of Defense of Armenia it is stated that “As part of the preparation for participation in international peacekeeping missions, Armenia and the United States will carry out a joint military exercise called “EAGLE PARTNER 2023” in Armenia from September 11 to September 1. 20. Although the statement states that the purpose of the exercise was to prepare Armenian troops for international peacekeeping missions, it does not specify how many soldiers from Armenia and the United States will participate in the exercises.

Russia, which has a military base in Armenia, is considered a major power in the South Caucasus region, which was part of the Soviet Union until 1991.

It is believed that this event will attract a reaction from Russia. Russia maintains peacekeeping forces in the region to ensure the continuation of the peace agreement that ended the second war between Azerbaijan and Armenia in 2020 following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

KREMLIN’S REACTION TO PAŞINYAN

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica over the weekend that Russia could not guarantee Armenia’s security in the face of Azerbaijani “aggression” in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Pashinyan claimed that Russia was unable to meet Armenia’s security needs due to the war in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters yesterday that he disagreed with Pashinyan’s remarks, saying: “Russia is an integral part of this region. “Russia has been playing a constant and very important role in stabilizing the situation in the region and will continue to do so.”
