Two organizations clashed: 16 dead
According to Colombian press reports, there were clashes between armed groups in the rural area of the administrative region of Arauca.
In the armed conflict between the armed rebel organization ELN and former members of the FARC, 16 people from both sides lost their lives.
It was claimed that those living in conflict areas left their homes in fear and fled to safer areas.
5 SERIOUS INJURIES ARE REPORTED
In the images reflected on social networks, it was reported that FARC opponents requested help from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and that 5 people were seriously injured.
In the ICRC statement on the subject, it was stated that the organization tried to help everyone without discrimination, saying: “Everyone, including the injured, needs to be protected. The evacuation of people from the conflict zone is essential under international humanitarian law.” The statement was included.
400 PEOPLE DIE IN 1 YEAR
The current friction between former FARC opponents and ELN members is believed to stem from a desire to control drug trafficking in the region.
Located on the border with Venezuela, Arauca is an important region in the ELN’s peace negotiations with the Colombian government.
It is estimated that between 300 and 400 people have been killed since last year in Arauca, which has become the epicenter of the spiral of violence that is plaguing Colombia, according to the Ombudsman’s Office. (AA)
