A large number of irregular migrants crossing into Greece were stranded in the region due to the forest fire. Some 30 irregular immigrants found in the burning forest area were handed over to the police yesterday.

Mitsotakis said that they started an investigation by showing a photo of the route of the fire in Meriç, and singled out the “immigrant” on the fire spots. “The cause is almost certainly human-induced. It is also certain that the burning sites are where illegal immigrants use them,” he said.

The Greek Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation last week into racist attacks against illegal immigrants in Meriç.
