Kim Jong-un’s threat of nuclear war
The North Korean leader called on his army to be ready to fight any invader.
The US and South Korean militaries have been conducting separate exercises since last week, but claim they are purely defensive. In the face of these events, Kim Jong-un delivered a speech on August 28, stating that the waters off the Korean peninsula had been destabilized with the danger of nuclear war.
Kim described President Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida as the “gang bosses” of the three countries.
North Korea has conducted more than 100 weapons tests since early 2022; most of them included nuclear-capable missiles designed to attack the United States and its allies South Korea and Japan. Many experts say North Korea ultimately wants to use its enhanced military capabilities.
