ECOWAS: We do not declare war on the people of Niger

Omar Touray, Chairman of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), assessed the decisions taken by ECOWAS for Niger at the press conference he held in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, regarding the political crisis in Niger.

Expressing that ECOWAS has not declared war on the people of Niger and has no plans to invade the country, Touray stated that the scale of sanctions, including legitimate power, have been activated. Touray stressed that the ECOWAS reserve force is ready to be deployed if the use of force becomes mandatory, but he is hopeful that the junta administration will take positive steps as a result of diplomatic efforts.

Noting that it is not too late for the soldiers who seized power in Niger to reconsider their decision because society will not turn a blind eye to the coup, Touray said the three-year transition period is unacceptable and urged the army to return to the civil government. as soon as possible.

President Mohammad Bazum in Niger was detained by elements of the Presidential Guard Regiment on July 26, and that afternoon the soldier announced that he had seized power. (AA)
