Another threat from Russia to another country: we annexed

Russian Security Council Vice President Dmitry Medvedev said his country may annex Georgia’s breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

“The idea of joining Russia is still very popular in the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions,” Medvedev, Russia’s former president, wrote in his article published in the Argumenty I Fakty newspaper. Medvedev, who has become one of the country’s toughest political voices since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said: “Annexation is likely to be feasible if there are good reasons.”

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgia had lost control over the aforementioned regions. Moscow recognized the independence of these regions in 2008 after Georgia responded with aggression to an attempt to retake control of South Ossetia by force.

Although Russia’s relations with Georgia have since softened, Medvedev accused the West of creating tensions by raising the possibility of Georgia’s NATO membership.

“If our concerns are close to coming true, we will not wait,” Medvedev said, referring to the possible annexation in his article celebrating the 15th anniversary of the recognition of the regions’ independence. (Reuters)
