ECOWAS leader met with delegation sent to Niger for mediation talks
The President of Nigeria and also Term President of ECOWAS, Tinubu, met with the former President of Nigeria, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and the Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, at the Aso Rock Palace in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria .
According to national media reports in Nigeria, Abubakar briefed Tinubu on the details of the meeting with the military administration in Niger.
Noting that the meeting with the Nigerien side was fruitful, Abubakar said he was “hopeful” that diplomacy would help resolve the political situation in Niger without resorting to a military option.
The ECOWAS mediation delegation headed by General Abubakar met separately with the military administration and President Mohammed Bazum on August 19 in the Niger capital, Niamey.
COUP IN NIGER
In Niger, President Bazum was detained by elements of the Presidential Guard Regiment on July 26, and that night the military announced that he had seized power.
General Abdurrahmane Tchiani, commander of the Presidential Guard Regiment, took office on July 28 as head of the transitional government called CNSP.
The CNSP appointed Lamine Zeine as prime minister on August 7 and announced the 21-member cabinet on August 10, made up of soldiers and civilians. (AA)
