TRNC Reaction to UNSC: ‘Distortion’

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) stated that the situation was distorted in the United Nations (UN) Security Council statement on Pile-Yiğitler.

In a written statement made by the TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that the Council made an unfortunate statement regarding the Pile-Yiğitler highway, which was started to be built to facilitate the access of citizens living in Pile to the TRNC lands, with purely humanitarian purposes in mind. It was stated that the TRNC authorities have always shown a constructive attitude and called for cooperation regarding the project, which has a history of more than 25 years.

In the statement, which stated that the criticism of the construction of the highway by relevant parties, especially the UN, is very significant, the following assessment was made:

“The situation in the UN Security Council declaration is distorted, as is the case of the UN Peacekeeping Force and the declarations of some countries on the subject. The main task of the UN Peacekeeping Force on the island is to keep calm. However, in the tension that occurred on August 18, the Peace Corps tried to prevent a non-military project, which was carried out for purely humanitarian purposes, through its soldiers and vehicles, and showed a provocative attitude.

Noting that the UN Peacekeeping Force continues to exist and operate in the TRNC due to the benevolent approach despite not obtaining the consent of the Turkish Cypriot side, the statement said: As a result of this incident, a once again that it is so far away and that it only acts as a spokesperson for one side of the island.” statements were included.

In the statement, it was stated that the TRNC, like any sovereign state, has the authority to carry out projects that will benefit its citizens on its own territory, and that the UN Security Council, which did not warn or interfere with the Greek side , which has numerous violations in the buffer zone (Green Line), especially in the village of Pile, is the decision of the UN Security Council on the Pile-Yiğitler highway. It was stressed that the call for the parties to carry out negotiations is not a consistent and fair approach.

Emphasizing that the UN Security Council is trying to impose the exhausted formula, the statement read: “We remind the Security Council of the fact that there are two separate peoples and states in Cyprus.” expression was used. (AA)
