Condemnation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the UN
In a written statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, “We consider unacceptable the physical intervention carried out yesterday by UNHCR soldiers to block the Pile-Yiğitler highway built in the territory under TRNC sovereignty and condemn energetically he. We fully support the statement of the TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the fair reaction of the TRNC authorities. The UN’s attitude towards the Pile-Yiğitler highway, which is a humanitarian project aimed at facilitating the direct access of TRNC citizens in Pile village to their homeland, and the statements made subsequently by the UN do not comply with the impartial position that the Peace Corps is obliged to display on the Island.
“INVENTION OF HUMANITARIAN NEEDS IS NOT AN ATTITUDE TO EXPLAIN”
It was claimed that the UNBG played an important role in the escalation of tension regarding the road construction project, which began with peace, and presented itself as a victim in the incidents in the countryside.
“In reality, what is expected of the UN Peacekeeping Force is to contribute to solving the humanitarian needs on the Island. Despite this, the fact that the UN has turned a blind eye to the fait accompli of the Greek Cypriot administration in the buffer zone for years, preventing the legitimate humanitarian needs of the Turkish Cypriots from being met is an attitude that cannot be explained. This situation makes it clear that the UN has not fulfilled its basic duties and functions, such as bringing the two sides of the Island equally closer and finding a solution to the conflicts. After the events that took place yesterday, the UN and the UN Peacekeeping Force must make an intense effort in the coming period so as not to completely lose the trust of the authorities and the people of TRNC. As the Guarantor State, we call on the UN Peacekeeping Force to refrain from actions and rhetoric that cast a shadow over its mission in Cyprus for almost 60 years, to treat both parties in Cyprus equally and to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity of the TRNC”.
