He was jailed for 18 years without guilt! $3 million in compensation
In New Zealand, the government has formally apologized to the 60-year-old Hall, saying he was “innocent” and saying it would pay him compensation.
The New Zealand Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Hall, who was convicted of the deliberate murder of Arthur Easton, 52, in the incident that took place almost 40 years ago, describing the decision as a “miscarriage of justice”.
The court awarded Hall approximately $3 million in damages.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Hall, who was accused of murdering Easton in October 1985 and diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, was paroled in 1994 and jailed again in 2012.
Faced with Hall’s objection to his innocence, retired High Court Justice Rodney Hansen, appointed by the New Zealand government to investigate the incident, speculated on Hall’s innocence and recommended compensation.
Hall, who spent a total of 18 years in prison, was released last year. (AA)
