Lebanon increases prison sentences for homosexuals

Lebanese Culture Minister Muhammed Murtaza made statements about LGBTIQ+ people living in the country. Stating that some groups in the country are trying to highlight “deviance and gender reassignment,” Murtaza said: “Lebanon is under attack. God forbid, if it succeeds, it will have catastrophic effects for society and the next generation.” forewarned

Referring to articles 9 and 10 of the Constitution, Murtaza noted that this includes the provision to respect religion and prohibit all teachings that are against moral values. Murtaza affirmed that he signed the bill that provides for increasing the penalty for homosexual relations to 3 years, adding that according to the bill, those who commit the crime will be fined 500 million Lebanese liras ($6,000). On the other hand, the bill also covers the sexual abuse of children.

According to the penal code in force in Lebanon, relationships that violate the moral values ​​of society are sentenced to 1 year in prison.

The project will be submitted to a vote in the Assembly prior approval of the Council of Ministers.

According to the country’s laws, if the bill is approved by parliament, it must be sent to the president for final approval, but as of October 31, 2022, the presidential office is vacant in Lebanon as no reached a consensus on a candidate. . (AA)
