Church appeal to young people: give up the European dream
In Tunisia, Catholic Archbishop Ilario Antoniazzi urged young people to give up their dream of emigrating to Europe.
The celebrations of the “Day of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary” were held with the participation of hundreds of Christians and Muslims last night in the town square of the city of Halkul Vadi, the capital of Tunisia. Speaking at the celebrations, Catholic Archbishop Antoniazzi addressed young people who dream of emigrating to Europe.
Antoniazzi said: “Italy is not like the dreams in your head. I say it as Italian. Give up the idea of crossing the sea and going to Italy. Love your beautiful country.” he used his statements.
Every year, hundreds of Tunisian irregular migrants cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe in the hope of a better life. Situated in the middle of Algeria and Libya, Tunisia is also a transit route for irregular African migrants, as it is close to the southern Italian islands.
Irregular migrants arriving in Tunisia from Africa try to cross to Europe by boat when they find the opportunity, after staying for some time in the cities of southern Tunisia. Every year, many African immigrants die on the sea voyage they undertake with the dream of Europe. (AA)
