The country is at a standstill… Minister of Defense: The situation is worrying
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has urged the government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to postpone the vote on the judicial reform law due in Parliament.
According to the Israeli television news “Channel 12”, Defense Minister Gallant made a statement on the controversial judicial reform bill that provoked reaction from many segments in Israel. Stating that the situation in Israel is worrying, Gallant urged the government to postpone voting on the judicial reform bill in Parliament.
According to Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) news, Gallant urged the government to adopt the “watered-down” version of the bill that would lift Supreme Court control over the government, which was approved in the first vote in Parliament on July 10.
SOLDIERS ALSO PROTEST
Hundreds of reservists in Israel signed a petition stating that they left the army to protest the government’s legal regulation restricting the powers of the judiciary, at a demonstration near the Defense Ministry building in Tel Aviv on July 19.
In speeches delivered during the rally, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant urged a halt to government regulation of the judiciary, “seeing the fragmentation in the military.”
The “judicial reform” announced by Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin on January 5 includes changes such as limiting the powers of the Supreme Court and the power to have a say in judicial appointments. Prime Minister Netanyahu announced that he had postponed judicial regulation, sparking protests and mass strikes across the country, on March 27, but announced that he would put judicial regulation back on the agenda after Parliament approved the 2023-2024 budget in late May.
The government had recently pushed the button for judicial regulation after its negotiations with the opposition stalled. The ruling coalition plans to submit to Parliament tomorrow the bill that will lift the Supreme Court’s control of the government for the second and third ballots. (AA)
