As Erdogan extends an olive branch to Assad, a very harsh statement from Syria

While normalization efforts between Ankara and Damascus remained on the agenda, a harsh statement came from Syria towards Turkey.

President Erdoğan said at the beginning of the week: “We do not have a situation to close the door with Syria. The door is open. Quadruple summits should be held, but we are not locked in at the meeting point with Bashar Assad.

Syrian leader Assad, on the other hand, said he would not sit down with Erdogan until the Turkish army is fully withdrawn from Syria.

WE CONDEMN THE TURKISH OCCUPATION

As rapprochement efforts with Syria continued, the Damascus administration accused Turkey of cutting off Hasaka’s water in the northeast of the country. In its statement, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates defined Turkey as an “occupying power” and said: “We condemn the Turkish and American invasions that continue to deprive more than a million Syrians of water in the city of Hasakah.”

Describing the situation as “this grave violation of international law,” Damascus called on the United Nations to take urgent and effective action. “Syria once again emphasizes that ending the illegal presence of American and Turkish forces on Syrian soil is the only way to end the suffering of our people,” the ministry said.

The water problem sometimes causes a crisis between Turkey and other neighboring countries, Iran and Iraq.
