Recent hikes have messed it up too! Here is the cost of making Ashura at home

Ashura, which is made with about 40 ingredients such as wheat, chickpeas, beans, figs, cinnamon and sugar, is no longer a symbol of abundance and fertility. Due to the crisis that hit Turkey, nothing was left without an increase. It has become a dream to distribute the ashura to be held on the 10th of Muharram, which started yesterday, to the neighbor.

While walnuts are priced between 170 and 300 TL, hazelnuts are priced between 175 and 280 TL, chickpeas and dried beans are priced between 40 and 80 TL, while a three-kilogram packet of sugar sells for 90 TL.

The necessary materials and the average amount to pay for 12 ashura bowls to be made at home are the following:

Safe wheat (250 grams): £6.5
Chickpeas (125 grams): £4.75
Dry beans (125 grams): 7TL
Raisins (100 grams): £5.80
Dried apricots (100 grams): 19.20 TL
Dried figs (100 grams): 15TL
Granulated sugar (650 grams): 7:30 p.m.
Water (4 liters): £9.60
Nuts (100 grams): £26.25
Nuts (100 grams): £19.65
Pine nuts (50 grams): 100TL
TOTAL: 242.65 TL

(Calculated based on the average of the prices of three market chains).

THE MEANING OF ASHURE DAY

The Day of Ashura, which derives from the word “ashara” which means “ten” in Arabic, coincides with the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Hijri year. According to hadith sources, Prophet Noah’s ship survived the flood and Prophet Musa’s rescue of the Israelites from Pharaoh as it passed through the Red Sea took place on the same day.

In addition, according to many works of cultural history, it is reported that the repentance of the prophet Adam was accepted after his sin, the prophet Idris was raised alive, the prophet Abraham was not burned in the fire, the prophet Jacob was reunited with his son Yusuf, the diseases of the prophet Job were cured, the prophet Yunus emerged from the stomach of a fish, and the prophet Jesus was raised to heaven, as the hadith.

At the same time, the “Karbala incident”, in which the second Caliph of the Umayyad State, Yazid bin Muaviye, was martyred on 10 Muharram 61 (October 10, 680) according to the Hijri calendar, took place on the 10th of Muharram.

Muslims, who attach great importance to the fact that these events take place on the tenth day of Muharram, spend that day performing a voluntary fast.

Since Prophet Noah and those who boarded the ship following his call consumed the ashura vaccine, the Muslim tradition of sharing by making ashura is also kept alive today.
