TIME IS RUNNING OUT
The vessel, operated by OceanGate Expeditions, was reported missing as it was unable to return to the Canadian research vessel where it was launched on Sunday morning and lost communication with the captain. As the search continues for the team, who went to view the wreckage and was reported to be without oxygen until Thursday, experts are trying to shed light on the veil of secrecy by interpreting the event.
According to an expert, five people lost under the sea are likely dealing with not only a terrifying but also a disturbing experience. Retired US Coast Guard Commander John Mixson told Fox News: “As far as I understand, the ships are not designed for long-range, multi-day excursions. So it must have been a very, very disturbing dark experience with a lot of hope and prayer.”
EXPERTS ARE CONCERNED
Speaking to Fox News, Mixson said: “In a situation like this, when you lose all communication, it’s hard to say what really happened until we found the boat. This is not a common thing,” he said.
Drawing attention to the lack of oxygen, Mixson said: “I can say that it is extremely serious. This is a terrible situation,” he said.
But on the other hand, it is billed as a search and rescue mission that should give hope to everyone, including the family and friends of those on board.”
The US Coast Guard is leading the search for the vehicle to the famous wreck of the Titanic as part of a tourist and research expedition. OceanGate Expeditions, the private company that launched the ship, offers these tours for $250,000 per person.
A DEPTH RECORD SEARCH IS PERFORMED
The search, on the other hand, is focused on an area of about 13,000 feet, and if successful, it will be the deepest rescue mission ever. However, coast guard officials and experts say the region’s record depth makes a search difficult.
“If the underwater vehicle is still intact but beyond the continental shelf, there are very few ships that can go that deep, and certainly no diver can do that,” said Alistair Greig, professor of marine engineering at University College London.
Authorities are working to obtain a remote-controlled vehicle that can dive to a depth of 20,000 feet where the missing sub was found, according to OceanGate consultant David Concannon.
Inside the missing vehicle were British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shanzada Dawood and her 19-year-old son, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.
COULD BE STORED OR EXPLOITED
While the search for the incident, which is the focus of the world press, continues, some experts do not have much hope.
Experts speculate that the tourist submarine, which went missing on an expedition to the Titanic over the weekend, may have gotten stuck in the wreckage of the sunken ship and, worse, exploded.
Titanic expedition leader G. Michael Harris says he fears a tragedy will occur on the missing submarine and nothing can be done to save the passengers:
“In the worst case, something happens to the trunk. Our fear is that it exploded at about 3,200 meters. I don’t see anything that can be done at this point. I try to be a little cautious.”
Harris points out that very few people have ever descended to the depth of the Titanic wreck, and says that there may be more to space than this depth of ocean: “When diving in these situations, you have to do everything absolutely perfect and for the book.”
NO LOSS INFORMATION GIVEN FOR 8 HOURS
Experts also point out that even if few vehicles can reach this depth, they are unlikely to stick with the submarine and bring it to the ocean surface.
Rear Admiral John Mauger, who oversaw the search and rescue mission for the missing submarine, says the ship may have been stranded on the Titanic some 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
“We don’t have the equipment to probe the wreckage,” Mauger said. There is a lot of debris, so it will be difficult to locate it, but for now we are focused on finding it.”
The coast guard said Tuesday that it hoped the missing submarine had remained there undetected. “If it’s on the surface, we’re pretty sure we can find it,” Capt. Jamie Frederick said, noting there was fog in the area where the sub disappeared.
Tour vehicle, St. John’s lost contact with its mother ship, the Polar Prince, which sank in the water about 400 miles south of Newfoundland and an hour and 45 minutes later. Although the submarine lost contact around 9:45 a.m., the US Coast Guard did not report her missing until 5:40 p.m., eight hours later.
