US President Joe Biden is open to a plan that would make it easier for Ukraine to join NATO after the war, though the plan doesn’t say when Kiev might join NATO. The American news site Politico reported it on Thursday on the basis of two sources.
According to two US officials, Biden would welcome scrapping Ukraine’s action plan for NATO membership. This roadmap tests and helps a country meet NATO requirements, such as democratic and military reforms. It is then determined whether a country can become a member.
Support allies
By skipping this requirement, while Ukraine would still have to make some pro-democracy changes, alliance members would be able to unanimously welcome Kiev into NATO anytime thereafter. The proposal to remove this action plan would not include a formal invitation or timetable for NATO membership, Politico said.
In Washington this week, Biden discussed the idea with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who pitched the proposal. Biden has made clear he is “open” to allies who support him, a senior US official said on anonymity.
NATO summit
According to Politico, the removal of this requirement for Ukraine would most likely have been formally announced at the July NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania. According to the US official, talks were held with NATO allies to see if “consensus can be reached”.
