Sarkozy’s house, accused of bribery, is searched
As reported by the French television channel BFMTV, in the framework of the Libyan Financing Case, the businessman testified under suspicion that he pressured Ziad Takieddine to drop the charges against him. Sarkozy’s house in Paris was also searched as part of the investigation.
EVENT HISTORY
It is claimed that Sarkozy, who was president of France from 2007-2012, “received illegal financial support from then Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to run the presidential election campaign in 2007 and ran the campaign with this support.”
Takieddine, of French-Lebanese origin, is said to have brought €5 million from Libya to Sarkozy in late 2006.
A preliminary investigation into the allegations was opened in 2013. Sarkozy was arrested in Paris on March 21, 2018 and an investigation was opened on charges of “illegal financing of the electoral campaign, corruption and concealment of Libyan public funds”.
Businessman Takieddine, on the other hand, first argued that Sarkozy received funding from Libya, then changed his statements in 2020 for an unknown reason and claimed otherwise.
Sarkozy is suspected of having pressured Takieddine through at least 8 people to press charges against him.
The former French president is claimed to have spent €608,000 on this. (AA)
