Japan wants to reverse aging: three days off a week for parents Related articles

A major change in labor laws in Japan is meant to address the extreme aging of the country. The new legislation should make it easier for Japanese parents to share work and household chores. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida calls it the last chance to reverse the decline in the birth rate.

The plans offer employees a more flexible workweek, with no less than three days off per week. Maximizing overtime should benefit family life. In addition, the income limit on child care allowance will expire and women participating in a fertility program will be required to receive free work from their employers.

Traditionally, men with long hours make up the majority of the workforce in Japanese companies. The plans should remove domestic pressure from women and distribute it more equally.
