Thousands marched in support of the president

March in support of the President of Colombia

Thousands of people in Colombia took to the streets at the call of President Gustavo Petro and supported the reforms that the government wanted to introduce.

Various unions, representatives of political organizations and sympathizers of Petro, who took over the squares of many cities, especially in the capital Bogotá, marched in support of the government’s policies. The march, which was attended by Petro and Vice President Francia Márquez, began on Seventh Avenue in Bogotá.

Large groups that marched towards the historic Plaza de Bolívar, accompanied by slogans and music, supported the Petro government and reacted to Congress.

Petro, who walked with the crowd for a while, called for the approval of the reforms in his speech and said: “That they accept the reforms that guarantee the humble and just rights of the people. This is not a violent, armed demand, but the demand of disenfranchised and marginalized people on their own land.

Addressing Congress, Petro emphasized that they do not chase whims and said: “Congress knows that the people want reforms. May Congress not betray the people, may we not turn our backs on peace. These people who accompany me show that our national government is not alone. Our goal is only to serve the Colombian people. We are here to defend your rights,” he said.

Vice President Márquez also asked Congress not to turn a deaf ear to the wishes of the people and said: “We are in the streets so that our elderly do not continue to die in dishonorable conditions, workers have rights, women are not harassed and social equality is get.”
According to the Colombian press, between 7,500 and 10,000 people attended the march in Bogotá.

Petro’s “Health Reform” and “Labor Reform” bills generated controversy in Congress between the ruling party and the opposition. Since the opposition parties have the advantage in terms of the number of seats in Congress, the desire to seize power cannot implement the laws. (AA)
