EU ‘second round’ statement
Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Union (EU) Commission, said that they closely followed the elections held in Turkey, that the high turnout was a great achievement and that they were looking forward to see what the second round would bring.
Von der Leyen, at a press conference with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, answered the question about his assessment of the 28th term presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey. Stating that Turkey is an important partner for them, von der Leyen used the following expressions:
“The large turnout in these elections is really good news, because it shows that Turks are committed to going out and voting using their democratic rights and that they value democratic institutions. This is the great victory of yesterday’s elections. The elections are still going on. Now it remains to see the second round. We are closely following the statements in this regard. We have to see what the second round brings”.
EU Council President Michel, on the other hand, said that he appreciated Turkish citizens for the high turnout in the elections. Pointing out the importance of the electoral process in democracies, Michel affirmed that they will follow the result of this process. (AA)
