Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he will hand over power without problems if he loses the presidential election on Sunday. “A ridiculous question,” Erdogan said on national television when asked by a reporter. “We come to power in Türkiye by democratic means. If our country decides otherwise, I will do what democracy requires, I cannot do otherwise.”
Though trailing in the polls, Erdogan believes he will win the election against his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the candidate representing six opposition parties.
The opposition fears that Erdogan will not lose and resorts to a scenario like his American and Brazilian predecessors Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro. Erdogan and other leading figures in the ruling AKP party had previously said that Erdogan’s loss must have been the result of a Western conspiracy.
