The case of Fox News v. Dominion kicks off, ‘Trump watches from the sidelines’ Related articles

Voting computer maker Dominion sued Fox News for defamation after the 2020 presidential election, seeking $1.6 billion. “Legally, it’s a question of whether Fox deliberately wanted to cause harm,” says foreign commentator Bernard Hammelburg.

The case in which voting computer maker Dominion is suing America’s most popular news channel revolves around what happened after the 2020 presidential election.

“Trump then claimed that Dominion’s voting machines were being misused, causing fewer Republican votes and more Democrats to count,” Hammelburg said. “Fox took that story one-on-one and the commentators on the channel repeated it as well.” Dominion believes the company suffered reputational damage as a result of this report.

Evil intentions

But, behind the scenes, those same Fox commentators didn’t believe Trump’s claim at all. Here’s what it’s all about now, according to Hammelburg: “You can tell anything you want in America, including lies, unless you have a bad intention.” This is called “malice” in US law. Then you are punishable.” The judge must now find out if this was the case with Fox News.

What American correspondent Jan Postma notes is that Fox News prefers to spend as few words as possible on the subject. (ANP/AFP)

What American correspondent Jan Postma notes is that Fox News prefers to spend as few words as possible on the subject. ‘For example, if you search ‘Dominion’ on the FOX News site, you’ll get a message from two days ago and then one from a month ago. And then much further back. That’s how little they talk about it.”

The chances of liquidation decrease

It looked like Fox News and Dominion would reach a settlement on Monday, so the case was initially delayed by a day. “It could still happen,” says Postma, though he now believes the chance of that happening is much smaller.

Trump, around whom everything revolves, watches from the sidelines. “Of course he likes to get involved, as we are used to from him,” says Postma. “He said a few days ago on Truth Social, his social network, that Fox News had better tell the truth. But then she talks about his ‘his’ truth: that electoral fraud has been committed and that he is the real president of America. Trump continues to insist on this and asks Fox to do the same.”

‘Good things will happen’

In that message, Trump also told Fox that “good things would happen” if they stood their ground. “But then you may think: This also sounds a bit ominous for the news channel,” the US correspondent said.
