Homeless crisis in Los Angeles spirals out of control
In the US, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, in her annual State of the City address to City Hall, proposed a “record level” budget for homelessness. Bass said that in next year’s budget, he will recommend spending $1.3 billion on shelter and treatment programs that can solve the “homelessness crisis” that is spiraling out of control in the city, and that the budget will include funds for treatment for substance abuse of the homeless.
State Governor Gavin Newsom also pledged to deliver 500 temporary homes to the city, while the Joe Biden administration reported that more than $200 million was sent to homeless programs.
NUMBER OF HOMELESS EXCEEDS 40 THOUSAND
In the city, significant spending has been made for programs created for the homeless over the years. Former Mayor Eric Garcetti signed a budget of around $1 billion in 2021 for homelessness, but the homeless population continued to grow.
Half of the more than 40,000 homeless people in the city are struggling with drug or alcohol addiction.
It is claimed that an average of 5 homeless people die in the city every day. (AA)
