According to news on the Times of Israel website, a senior Israeli official noted that the police’s use of violence against Palestinians praying at Masjid al-Aqsa “has done serious harm to Israel.”

He argued that “the Israeli police had no choice but to enter the mosque, as they received intelligence that the Palestinians were storing weapons in the mosque.”

Acknowledging that the police used excessive and disproportionate violence against the Palestinians, the official said that the “global image of Israel was seriously damaged by the incident.”

The press conference offered by Yair Lapid, leader of the main opposition party in Israel, “There is a future”, after his meeting with Netanyahu in Tel Aviv, was published on the website of the newspaper Yediot Ahronot.

Lapid said he was concerned about recent events in Israel, but “more concerned” after meeting with Netanyahu.

The disproportionate use of force by Israeli police, using sound bombs, rubber-coated bullets and batons, against Muslims at Masjid al-Aqsa for two days in a row, escalated tension in occupied East Jerusalem and sparked events.
