Ancient Greek minister: Turkish border fence won’t prevent migration

Yannis Muzalas, who served as Immigration and Asylum Minister during the Radical Left Alliance (SYRIZA) government in Greece, claimed that the steel fence erected on the Turkish-Greek border to prevent asylum seekers “stopped the transitions for a while.” .

Responding to questions from journalism students, Muzalas said that asylum seekers will soon find other routes of passage, and that refugees will go especially to the islands.

Underlining that Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis was unable to find funds from Europe for the construction of the steel fence, Muzalas said: “The main problem is not the fence. The main issue is to produce policies to handle the issue of migration,” he said.

Muzalas stated that the steel fence could not prevent refugee crossings, saying: “Currently, there are steel fences in 65 countries and refugee crossings cannot be prevented in any way. On the contrary, the transitions have doubled”. (AA)
