US submarine tension in Cyprus

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) strongly condemned the anchoring of the USS San Juan submarine in the port of the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA).

In a written statement issued by the TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that the Greek Cypriot Administration of Cyprus continued to disturb the atmosphere of stability and peace on the island and the eastern Mediterranean by increasing its armament activities. We repeatedly state that the removal of the US arms sales restriction on the Greek Cypriot administration and subsequent measures that will endanger the security of the Turkish Cypriot people will encourage the Greek Cypriot administration to take up arms.

Recalling that the Greek Cypriot Defense Minister, Mihalis Yorgallas, made statements that he would buy weapons systems from the US, it was noted that the events showed that the US helped the Greek Cypriot Administration to systematically arm the Greek Cypriot Administration .

In the statement, it was stressed that the Greek Cypriots should understand this situation and that the endangerment of the security of the Turkish Cypriot people by the Greek Cypriots would be met by the following views:
“Motherland Turkey and the TRNC will act resolutely against threats to the Turkish Cypriot people and the security of Turkey. History confirms our resolve against threats to our security. The US policy of encouraging the arming of the Greek Cypriot administration prevents the establishment of the necessary environment of peace and stability on the island and the eastern Mediterranean. This policy also prevents reaching a fair, sustainable and lasting agreement on the Island that respects the facts”. (AA)
