Kiev: Ukrainian army still resists Bachmut
02:30 | The Ukrainian army is still resisting Bachmut, according to Kiev. Ukraine rejects the Wagner Group’s claim that the Russian mercenary army has taken the city.
“The enemy has not ceased its offensive at Bachmoet. But Ukrainian forces heroically defend the city during numerous attacks,” the army command said in a Facebook message on Sunday night.
Earlier in the night between Sunday and Monday, the Wagner group claimed to have conquered Bachmoet “in a legal sense”. The group’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said his troops hoisted the Russian flag over the city’s town hall.
“From a legal point of view, Bachmut was taken,” Prigozhin reported via Telegram. There she also shared video footage of him holding a Russian flag with a tribute to military blogger Vladlen Tatarski, who was killed in a bomb attack at a St. Petersburg cafe on Sunday.
“The commanders of the units that have taken over the town hall and the entire center will fly this flag,” Prigozhin said. “This is Wagner’s private army, these are the men who took Bachmoet. Legally, it’s ours.’
