Despite Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant being fired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Gallant continues to work. The minister was one of the prime ministers to openly criticize the controversial reforms of the judiciary. Netanyahu didn’t accept it, after which he fired Gallant last Sunday.
In the meantime, Gallant has simply remained in his post and is performing his duties as Secretary of Defense. For example, on Wednesday he was present at the launch of a new Israeli spy satellite. He is also said to have been invited to regular security consultations with the prime minister. What makes it difficult for Netanyahu to oust Gallant is the minister’s popularity. Since the criticisms he has expressed have become very popular among the population.
No written confirmation
Gallant has so far stated that he has not received written confirmation of his resignation. After such a resignation letter, a minister must in principle leave within 48 hours, so if Gallant had received that letter soon after his resignation, Tuesday would have been his last day as a minister.
Netanyahu postponed judicial reforms on Monday, but that did not immediately reverse his minister’s resignation. If Gallant has to step down, there is still uncertainty in the Israeli media as to who should succeed him.
