Turkey condemns provocation in Denmark
The Foreign Ministry condemned in the strongest terms the attack on the Koran and the Turkish flag yesterday in Denmark.
In a written statement made by the Ministry, “We condemn in the strongest terms the vile attack against our holy book, the Holy Quran and our glorious flag, in Denmark last night. We in no way accept that this despicable act, which constitutes a hate crime, be allowed under the name of free speech.
Emphasizing that this action, which took place in the month of Ramadan, clearly shows once again that Islamophobia, discrimination and xenophobia are reaching alarming levels in Europe with each passing day, and that no lessons have been learned from the past, The statement says that Turkey strongly condemns and protests this action in Denmark, it informed the authorities.
The statement called on the Danish authorities to take the necessary measures against the perpetrators of the hate crime in question and to take concrete measures to prevent such provocations that undermine social peace and the culture of peaceful coexistence.
In Denmark, on January 27, the Koran was burned in front of the mosque and in front of the Turkish Embassy in Copenhagen. There was a similar attack on the Holy Quran on January 21 in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. (AA)
