The prosecution could decide today whether to prosecute the Trump-related items

The New York Attorney’s Office could decide today whether former President Donald Trump will be tried, pending the outcome of the grand jury which is still in session. Trump announced his arrest this weekend, alerting the security services. And I still am. “Not only in New York, but also in Washington,” says US correspondent Jan Postma from New York.

The decision on whether former President Donald Trump will be indicted and an arrest warrant issued against him will likely be made today in New York Manhattan, according to US media. Earlier, Trump said he would be arrested yesterday, but that didn’t happen. “Nothing has come, we should have foreseen it,” says Postma. “Now they say it could happen today, it depends on what happens in the grand jury.”

The grand jury is convening today and may hear another witness. It is not known who he is, Postma says, but “if there is a vote for the prosecution, Trump can be tried next week”. Because only when the grand jury has finished its work, the attorney general’s office (led by Democratic attorney Alvin Bragg) decides whether to proceed or not.

Fortress

It’s true that nobody knows what will happen, but there is a lot of speculation and pre-screening for the worst case scenario. According to Postma, the Manhattan courthouse has turned into a fortress with a media circus in front of it. “The police have been placed on high alert. Not only in New York, but also in Washington. Everyone has the storming of the Capitol in mind, of course.

“He will probably get a fine and not a prison sentence”

The indictment focuses on possible wrongdoing in Trump’s administration and businesses after he paid porn star Stephanie “Stormy Daniels” Clifford $130,000 through Trump’s attorney Michael Cohen. You may be involved in tax evasion. Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison in 2018.

Postma doesn’t think there’s much of a chance Trump will go to jail. “He’ll probably get a fine and not a prison sentence. It’s actually also an old case that isn’t all that important compared to other cases like electoral manipulation in Georgia, fraud and confidential documents found in his home.
