TikTok ban is also from Belgium
The Belgian federal government has banned the Chinese social media platform TikTok on computers and mobile devices used by government officials.
The government’s decision was announced after the meeting of the National Security Council. Deputy Prime Minister Georges Gilkinet said in a statement on his Twitter account that the ban decision was made at the federal level.
Using the phrase “We made a logical and necessary decision,” Gilkinet stated that he will now only be on Facebook and Twitter.
In addition to the federal government, it was noted that the government of the Flemish region will also impose a TikTok ban for public employees. The Walloon government is expected to make the same decision soon.
The Belgian Cyber Security Center has also warned that TikTok collects significant amounts of user data, sometimes users are unaware of it, and this poses a risk in terms of privacy violation.
The center’s warning also stated that TikTok can manipulate the flow of information and content through algorithms, and Chinese laws require TikTok to cooperate with Chinese intelligence.
Some Western countries, especially the US, and the European Union (EU) institutions decided to ban the use of TikTok on the devices used by official employees for work in recent weeks. (AA)
